Crime, jobless rate and weather were factors in the list of cities with 150,000 people or fewer.
Idaho Falls has been named the 10th most secure place to live among American small towns, according to a study by the Farmers Insurance Group.
The rankings, compiled at www.bestplaces.net by database experts, took into consideration crime statistics, extreme weather, risk of natural disasters, environmental hazards, terrorist threats and job loss numbers in 138 U.S. metropolitan areas with populations of less than 150,000.
"Everyone looks for a safe, secure place to live," said Jeff Beyer, senior vice president and chief communications officer for Farmers. "Whether you are single or raising a family, a secure environment is important. It offers the well-being so necessary to succeed in today's fast-paced world."
The most secure small town to live in the United States, according to the study, is St. George, Utah.
Bend, Ore., ranks second, and the Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford area in southwestern Virginia ranks third. Rounding out the top five most secure small towns are Coeur d'Alene and Ithaca, N.Y.
The Boise-Nampa area was named the most secure large metropolitan area (population 500,000 or more), and the most secure midsize city (population between 150,000 and 500,000) was Las Cruces, N.M.
